At the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, it is our goal to not only teach children, but involve them as active participants and citizens of the world in taking care of the planet.

Welcome to the Virtual Learning Center which is your roadmap to active learning opportunities and collaborative projects addressing the environment and its most pressing issues. We have developed this online Sustainable Superhighway to provide virtual field trips, online workshops, presentations, conversations and participatory projects for students and professional development and support for educators that align with the State of California’s Environmental Principles and Concepts (https://www.californiaeei.org/).

Virtual Field Trips – H2O Today

H2O Today explores the beauty and essential nature of water, the planet’s lifeblood. The exhibition examines the diversity and challenges of our global water sources and promotes conversation, creativity and innovation through art, science and technology. H20 Today is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and adapted from an exhibition developed by the American Museum of Natural History, New York. Virtual tours and live See It With The Staff are offered.

Online Exhibits

Bursting At The Seams – Who made your clothes? Approximately 85 of all textiles (clothing) in the United States are thrown away. In 2017, that added up to a whopping 13 million tons! The repercussions that fast fashion has on the environment and global poverty are immense.

Against The Reef - Amidst the beauty and wonder, coral reefs around the world are threatened. The biggest threat is us  - through climate change and pollution. Come see why reefs matter, no matter where you live.  Learn about what you can do.

Teacher Toolbox
Our Teacher Toolbox has all the tools you need to engage students in integrated learning while exploring the world around them, creating innovative solutions to problems and sharing their outcomes. Teachers can request hands-on kits related to each of the four themes.

Themes:

Recycle or Not? - Learn the basics to help our environment by exploring the Four R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Responsibility. Discover the link between industry, education, the arts and the environment through the recycling prism.  We can tackle tough environmental issues together!

Politics of Plastic – Plastic is everywhere. In 2017, the U.S. produced nearly 35.4 million tons (32 million metric tons) of all types of plastics, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Only about 10 percent of that is recycled. That other 90 percent settles in our external environment—on land and sea. Explore the worldwide use and misuse of plastics in society. Can all plastic be recycled? Will there be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050?

Stick A Fork In It –Thirty to forty percent of our food supply is wasted and sent to the landfill. Our sustainable garden/food program is where kids learn to grow what they eat and eat what they grow! Where does our food come from? Students will discover how our daily food choices have a big impact on the environment - including packaging, sourcing and waste. In 2021, we will work with local schools to develop on site, drought tolerant gardens, from raised beds to keyhole gardens.

Bee Our Guest –Pollinators – birds, bats, bees and butterflies - nourish our planet by helping plants to reproduce and create the foods we need to survive and the foods we love to enjoy. Pollinator populations are changing. Many pollinator populations are in decline. The decline is attributed to a loss in feeding and nesting habitats. Pollution, the misuse of chemicals, disease, and climate change are all contributing to shrinking and shifting pollinator populations.
